Seismic risk mitigation is the greatest urban policy challenge the world confronts today. If you consider that too strong a claim, try to image another way in which bad urban policy could kill a million people in 30 seconds. Yet the politics of earthquakes are rarely discussed and when discussed, widely misunderstood. Investment in risk is an investment in lives & property, not a cost. Risk reduction is very good and useful, but it should not stop at the point of disaster.
We believe that risk can be reduced. And that investing in disaster preparedness and risk reduction by building safe hospitals, safe infrastructures, and second, by having risk assessment studies in local government, business units, are essential in mitigating the quake's impact.Read more
A little more than a year today, a 9.0 magnitude earhquake followed by a killer tsunami compounded by a nuclear accident at a damaged power plant rocked Japan. That was March 11, 2011.
